Soul Searching

How To Embark Upon An Utterly Fulfilling Soul Searching Journey

Do you have a part of you inside that feels trapped, empty, or lost?

If you dig deep enough, you’ll hear a voice screaming for your attention. It’s the voice of your soul. But if you distract yourself with work, entertainment, people, drama, social media, addictions, etc., you’ll never hear that voice and you’ll keep feeling trapped, empty, or lost.

Your soul wants to be free of bondage so it can follow its path. The bondage can come from mainstream media, societal pressure, subconscious programming, toxic relationships, self-limiting beliefs, etc.

Soul searching isn’t always about taking leaps of faith or making big gestures, although often it is. But many times, it’s small actions, rituals, and choices you make towards the direction that your soul wants you to go.

How do you know if you’re headed in the right direction?

You’ll know it. Your soul will communicate with you as an energy that you will feel through positive emotions, loving thoughts, and passionate action.

Soul searching is about finding your nature, spark, longings, values, purpose, and life path. It’s a personal journey that only you can find and choose to take.

Others may aid or impede your journey, but you must take full responsibility for listening to your soul and having the courage to follow its lead.

When you lose your soul, it means you’re confused about where you are and where you need to go. You feel disconnected from yourself and lose the zest for life. But realizing that you’re lost is the first step towards the great journey of soul searching.

Your Lost Soul

Many people are blind to the way society has programmed them. They never even get to the point where they feel that they have lost their soul, even when they’re deeply lost.

If you have the urge for soul searching, it’s a good sign that you’re at the start of the journey that you’re meant to take. You can only search for something that you’ve lost. If you don’t realize you’ve lost something, you’ll never begin the search.

Now that you’re ready to go off the well-trodden path, you can relax knowing that you’re on the right path. This path is only yours, and nobody else’s.

Your Human Needs

A soul needs your mind and body to go for what it longs for. That’s why taking good care of your mind and body is crucial. When you feel good from the inside, you’re free to think thoughts that matter the most.

Once you take care of your needs, you may also satisfy some human desires without getting lost in them. But let nothing distract you from the great journey of soul searching.

The dark side of human desires is that it’s easy to get lost in them. The upside of them is that they give clues for the soul’s longings.

Soul Searching

According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, self-actualization sits at the top of the human needs pyramid.

Beyond self-actualization comes self-transcendence.

A soul longs to express and liberate itself. Self-actualization is the path of expression. Self-transcendence is the path of liberation.

If you can feel your longing for expression and liberation, that means you’re in touch with your soul. Now all you have to do is listen to the calling.

Listening and self-expression go hand in hand. The more you listen, the better you can express. The better you express, the more you actualize your potential.

The purpose of self-actualization is to create something in the universe that goes beyond you. It’s something that remains with the world even after you’re gone. If you don’t get lost in human desires, the path of self-actualization naturally ties with self-transcendence.

The purpose of self-transcendence is to realize oneself as the source that you come from. It’s the ultimate freedom from the ego-self while acknowledging its existence. Enlightenment, Self-realization, Samadi, Satori, Nirvana, Moksha are all different names for it.

But that’s a topic for another day. Let’s come back and find out how to listen to your soul and how to express it.

Soul Expression

To hear and express your soul, be still, and do creative work. Here are some examples:

Art

All forms of art can help you express yourself. Find the form of art that resonates with you because that would help you express yourself the most in your unique way.

Journal

Journaling can be reflective writing, poetry, creative thinking, etc. You can go with whatever style suits you.

Self-talk

Self-talk is like journalling but in spoken form. You express yourself by talking to yourself. It’s also a good practice if you want to override your default thinking patterns.

Read

Reading a book that you get attracted to can help you find answers and thoughts to reflect upon.

Play

Your inner child wants to have fun. Pick up a hobby or find ways to add play to your life.

Sing & Dance

Music is another great way to connect with your soul. Once connected, you can use your voice or your body to express yourself.

Nature Walks

Long walks in nature help you disconnect from the world and be alone with your soul. It’s a great activity for new insights to arrive.

Meditation

Meditation is one of the best ways to go inside and connect with your true self. You watch your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without getting lost in them. When you do get lost in them, reset and do it again. You can choose an anchor point (like your breath) to direct your focus until the mind dissolves into nothingness.

Travel & Adventure

Traveling to new places, meeting new people, doing new things are all ways to get out of your comfort zone and expand your horizons. You don’t know what you don’t know. The more you experience, the more your soul gets exposed to new inputs, ideas, and possibilities.

Therapy & Coaching

Therapy works because another person listens to you as you express your heart out. Coaching is different, however. In coaching, the soul gets the chance to actualize itself, as it’s more focused on moving forward in a positive direction.

Walking Your Soul’s Path

Soul searching is an ongoing and personal journey. You never get to the finish line. It’s a mix of discovery, creation, and transformation. All you have to do is take the first step towards this journey and then keep taking the next step.

Your soul will give you directions, but you must be courageous enough to walk your path. Be willing to start from scratch all over again. Sometimes, you’ll be called to let go of relationships, places, career, comfort, security, money, etc. Other times, you’ll need to say yes to new opportunities, identity, character traits, passions, projects, relationships, places, etc.

Start with stillness to listen to your higher self and add a form of expression that you can use regularly. Finally, surrender, trust and watch as your mind and body take action. In the process, you’ll find yourself and reinvent yourself over and over again. It’s a unique and most fulfilling path you can take in your life.
